Our sincerest thanks to the Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Georgia, for raising their racquets in support of Tennis Thanks the Troops! The club hosted a tennis mixer/round robin and silent auction raising $2,500 for ThanksUSA scholarships! We encourage all USPTA pros to register their club as an official Tennis Thanks the Troops host facility. If you’re an avid player or fan, be sure to tell your club’s pro or director about Tennis Thanks the Troops today. The club raising the most money for Tennis Thanks the Troops will be able to send their pro and one guest to New York for the US Open, on August 30, 2013.

Welcome to Scholarship News! This blog has featured future teachers, tomorrow’s physicians, rising business executives, and even budding artists, but this week I have the pleasure of introducing a young man with a rather unique field of study. Meet Justin Fabling, a senior at Campbell University who is studying Business Administration with a concentration in Professional Golf Management and a minor in Religion. Since 2006, Justin has received a total of $7500 in ThanksUSA scholarships, including this year’s $3000 Pershing Square Foundation/ThanksUSA scholarship.

Justin Fabling

The Professional Golf Management program is only offered at 21 PGA accredited universities across the nation. In addition to the general college and business studies, Justin is completing the 32 credit hour PGA Golf Management Major core which covers every aspect of golf from teaching techniques, player development and tournament operations to facility operations, and turfgrass management.

When asked about future plans, Justin replied, “Upon graduation, I plan on beginning a career in the golf industry. I am most interested in upscale private club management.”

Justin already seems well prepared for his career. Part of the Professional Golf Management curriculum requires 16 months of internship work experience. Justin explains, “ Through my internships, I have been privileged to work at three of the top golf facilities in the country: Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, FL, Medinah Country Club in Medinah, IL and The Honors Course in Chattanooga, TN. These opportunities have helped me further realize my passion for the game of golf and have positioned me for an excellent job in the golf industry upon graduation. In addition, this summer I was accepted into Campbell’s 3-2 Program. In this accelerated curriculum, after five years, I will graduate as a Class A PGA Professional and have a Masters Degree in Business Administration.”

Justin has certainly found the best fit for his academics saying, “Campbell is a private Southern Baptist university with an enrollment of approximately 3,500 students on its main campus. Its small size and Christian atmosphere makes it an excellent match for my personality and desires in an educational institution.”

In addition to his studies, Justin is involved in numerous school and community activities, most connected to the Professional Golf Management Student Association. He helps organize, and participates in, the PGMA’s weekly golf tournaments and has organized two Red Cross blood drives. He attends Campus Crusade for Christ and a Thursday Night Bible Study and co-leads the PGM’s Bible Study, Amen Corner. To encourage the next generation of young golfers, Justin is a volunteer golf instructor for the First Tee of Wake County. “I am very appreciative that ThanksUSA has helped me attend a school that allows me to pursue something that I enjoy. If anyone is interested in a career in the golf industry, I would recommend taking a look at Campbell,” says Justin.

Justin’s school spirit and dedication to his studies is evident, but there is one aspect of his life that truly makes him proud – his family. “I am very proud of my family’s diverse and strong military background. Both of my grandfathers served in the Navy, my father, Capt. Brad Fabling, is active duty Coast Guard and my younger brother is currently “surviving” his first year at The Air Force Academy.”

ThanksUSA is proud to count Justin Fabling among our scholarship recipients and we thank his family for their past, present, and future service to our great nation. Hopefully, Justin will find some time between his studies to participate in one of ThanksUSA’s upcoming Golf tournaments!
